Cat Walk

This is a common occurrence, so I finally videoed it today just to have it for the future. When I walk down the far bank, the cats slowly follow me, sniffing smells from birds, turtles and alligators all the way. That's all that this video is except that Tiger Puff adds a little drama at the end.

Round One to Little Bear

In a continuation of things you can't control when you have outside cats, I happened to be outside a couple of days ago with the camera when the following happened. I was ready to intervene if necessary, but I won't be there to intervene all the time. You need to have your sound on to hear what happens.

More things you can't control with outdoor cats.

A very fragile mourning dove nest only about seven feet above the ground.

Cats climbing tall, tall trees.

And walking on tiny branches.

Right in their own backyard.

There's plenty for the kittens to do in their own backyard, and they take full advantage of it by
terrorizing lizards...

climbing trees....

which, by the way, are very good for scratching one's face on...

carefully monitoring the turtle activity...

and just surveying their domain.

So brave and yet so afraid.

Last night I was barely able to get Tiger Puff in. Little Bear didn't come in at all. I couldn't find him, and so when I finally went to bed about 1:00 a.m. (not because of Little Bear, but because I was working) I just locked the door. This morning, as I expected he would be, he was on the back porch.

They are so brave at night, running and jumping around, going under the fence into the side yard, the front yard, the neighbors' yards. But when I say "at night" I mean late at night, when there are generally no people in sight.

The daytime is a completely different story. Today some pretty loud kids were on the other side of the fence by the pond, and Jim opened the door (not because of the kids but just because we check to see who's on the porch many times during the day) and Tiger Puff rushed in in a complete panic. I went out, and Little Bear was on the other side of the greenhouse hiding. When he saw me, he ran toward the porch with his body low to the ground so as to be as invisible as possible.

The difference is like night and day.

The world is mine to bite.

You may have thorns, but I have teeth and claws!

Time out to watch the people across the lake.

And just because she is such a sweet and pretty girl.

Cause and Effect

Cat lovers - and a big surprise.

Today I talked to two of the three neighbors, and they are cat lovers, so all is well there. But as I was showing the pictures on my phone to one family, they said, regarding Buddy, "That's our cat!" I said, "Well, I took him to the vet to be neutered and have his shots and have his ears cleaned, because I had no idea he belonged to somebody." They were fine with that, but felt bad about the money and want to pay for part of it. I said it was completely up to them. But now I know where Buddy -- oh, they said his name is Lucky, but I'm going to keep calling him Buddy -- is at least part of the time when I don't see him for a few days at a time. They all said they hadn't seen the kittens yet, but I'm sure they will see them at some point.

It is getting warm, though, and in spite of the fan I put on the back porch the other day for them, the kittens have discovered how good the cool cement feels in the shade of the house in the afternoon.

These paws were made for roamin'.

I had been hoping that the kittens would not want to roam, but I guess with the examples they have from their mother and from Buddy and Harry that's not going to be the case. Here is Little Bear tonight, obviously outside the fence.

We've seen both of them as far as two yards down yesterday and today. At least we know they do know where home is. I put pictures of all the cats on my cell phone, and I think I'm going to talk to the three neighbors on this part of our street that I've never talked to about it so they know who the cats are and that they do belong to someone.
